Hiking Mistaya Falls
Jasper National Park
Overview
A short 500 m (1 way) trail leads to a dramatic limestone slot where the wide Mistaya River funnels through a narrow limestone gorge. The falls are a popular hike and for a good reason! Spring, summer, and fall are preferred seasons, but some do the hike in the winter as well. The falls are stunningly sculpted and a treat to view.
Getting There
From Jasper, follow AB-93 (Icefield Parkway) south about 157km to a signed parking area on the west side of the road.
From Banff, follow the Trans-Canada highway north 57 km to AB-93 (Icefield Parkway). Take the AB-93 north 70.5 km to the signed parking area on the west side of the road.
Route
From the trailhead, the well-traveled, wide trail as it descends to the bridge over the gorge. The 12m (40 ft) falls are just upstream from the bridge. The area around the bridge is a perfect place for a picnic while taking in the sights.
Most will return from the bridge, though the trail continues as the Howse Pass Trail.
