Looking out the entrance of Big Brush Creek Cave

Looking out the entrance of Big Brush Creek Cave

Big Brush Creek Cave is only about 5 miles away from Little Brush Creek Cave as the crow flies, and is currently the second longest mapped cave in Utah. The current mapped length of all the passages is about 5 miles. This cave, like Little Brush Creek Cave, also contains ice columns in the winter and spring. Unlike Little Brush Creek Cave, this one is more difficult to reach in the winter, so most will want to visit summer through fall. Spring snowmelt can cause flowing water in the cave, so late spring or summer is likely a better time to visit after the snow is gone, and spring melt has finished.

Of the two, we enjoyed Big Brush Creek cave more than Little Brush Creek Cave. It has a larger entrance room, and the passages we explored were a bit easier and more friendly than the cobblestone lined floor of Little Brush Creek. There are still some very tight spots though!

Warning: The entrance room is very popular to visit, and I would say suitable for most groups. Continuing beyond the entrance room, however, quickly becomes the domain of experienced cavers only. The cave contains a complicated maze of passages, low crawls, ice-cold pools, and other hazards. If wanting to explore deep into the cave, I would highly recommend contacting the Wasatch Grotto. This is not the place for inexperienced cavers.
