The Tortoise Trail in Snow Canyon State Park is a scenic and accessible path that offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the park's stunning red rock landscapes while learning about the native desert tortoise population. This relatively easy, well-maintained trail stretches for about 1/3 of a mile round-trip and is suitable for almost all. As you walk along the trail, you'll be surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs, ancient lava flows, and diverse desert vegetation, creating a picturesque and tranquil environment. Interpretive signs along the way provide insight into the fragile ecosystem and the importance of protecting the threatened Mojave Desert tortoise, which calls this region home.
Getting There
The trailhead is the Upper Galoot Picnic area in Snow Canyon State Park. From the south entrance station to Snow Canyon State Park, drive north into the park for 2.5 miles. The picnic area/trailhead has a toilet as well as several picnic tables and a large parking area.
Route
From the trailhead/picnic area, follow the trail about 800 feet to its end at a large stone tortoise with benches to sit. There are a number of very informative interoperative signs along the way.
We enjoyed this trail after having a picnic at the trailhead, it is a nice spot to sit and take in the beauty of the park.
The slick rock dune south of the picnic area is also quite popular to climb on and has nice views of the area.
