Hiking Old Fort Point
Jasper Canada
Overview
Old Fort Point was one of my toddler's favorite hikes in Jasper. Why? Because it started with a seemingly endless staircase! She enjoyed the challenge of the stairs, but also the views and length of the hike. You can do a longer loop hike, but the short out-and-back was perfect with a toddler.
The hike has some stairs and elevation, with the rewards being incredible views of the Athabasca River, Whistler Peak, Pyramid Peak, and other ranges in the distance. Though I was mostly looking for a short outing for my daughter, it turned out to be a trail I thoroughly enjoyed as well!
Getting There
From downtown Jasper, head south on Connaught Dr/AB-16A. Turn left onto Hazel Ave. Follow it for 750m as it goes under the railroad, then crosses AB-16. Turn left onto Old Fort Point Rd, and follow it 900m to the trailhead on the right. This is just after the road crosses the Athabasca River.
Route
From the trailhead, be sure to consult the trail map if making the loop. The shortest route to the point is via the steep staircase. Once up the stairs, the views of the Athabasca River below and Jasper are dramatic and stunning. Rafting groups can often be viewed on the river from this vantage point.
The trail continues to climb with some rocky sections that proved challenging and fun to a toddler. The trail flattens out at the site of the Old Fort, though continue up to the actual highpoint for excellent views and pictures.
We returned the same way, though a loop is signed if looking for a more extended outing.
