When Lake Bonneville was at its main level, about 4900’, a large shoreline was created that is easily visible today along the island. This shoreline makes for mostly easy walking and excellent views. This hike starts steep to reach the old shoreline, then meanders along the shoreline bench to an inconspicuous looking “cave”.
When my wife and I were first dating, we hiked this route on the way to Castle Rock Peak. I would have not even noticed the relatively small cave entrance had it not been for a large group of boy scouts milling about the entrance.
It turns out the small cave entrance opens to a large cavern that is used occasionally by scouts and other groups to camp in. After visiting with the scouts, we summited the peak, and stopped at the cave on our return to check it out after the scouts left. It is pretty neat! The uneven floor and dampness would not make it my first choice for a campsite, but it is a great hiking destination.
