Off the Notom Road, requiring a rough road to reach the trail, sits an oasis. Oak Creek is probably the hidden gem of Capitol Reef National Park that you've never heard of! A 10-minute hike from the trailhead enters a world of waterfalls, sand floored canyon, a crystal clear cool stream, and sculpted canyon walls reminiscent, to me at least, of Zion National Park. If this had easier access, I am convinced to would be one of the more popular hikes in the park. Perhaps a rough road is a good thing, on my visit I saw no one and very little signs of traffic.
This is a great hike for anyone, but may be particularly good as a family hike. Kids will love the stream and sandy narrows. I found a surprising amount of quick sand in the narrows. Be sure to have shoes well attached to your feet!
