Todd, Andrew, and I did Buckeyes, took 8.5 hrs, stunningly gorgeous views, fun canyon, sooo many rappels (lots of fiddlesticking; never used Sandtrap or Wanchor, but could have), second to last rap (through arch) needed almost all rope to get down (different than Ryan’s description).

Approach canyon was really pretty and the 900 ‘ elevation wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Rope drag was bad. Fiddle stick would’ve been the way to go for sure

Very pretty. Ages well as a memory. One of the deadman anchors was garbage though--easily pulled up by one hand. We totally redid it with a much bigger rock and burried. Fiddlesticked 4 raps. Couldn't avoid all water; just had a neoprene top, which was fine.

Solo trip. Sunny but quite cold. 29 degrees going in. 7 degrees coming out. I only had a two-wheel drive vehicle so i parked at the highway and hiked in and out. Took me twelve hours from car to car. Water had about an inch of ice on it and was ankle to knee deep in most places. I got a late start and with limited daylight, i finished the last four hours in the dark. The full moon was incredible in the solitary silence during the rappel through the last arch. After setting my fiddle-stick under the pine, i turned my headlamp off and just enjoyed the dancing soft shadows cast by silvery lunar glow glistening across the ice and snow. 17 rappels in all due to slick conditions and limited access to natural anchors. I learned so much on that trip. Much about the canyon, but i think even more about myself. I am still riding the high of what has been one of the best outdoor experiences of my life.

Beautiful and Sunny!

All webbing removed. Be prepared with a fiddlestick, sandtrap, and water pocket. Knowing how to safely execute a pack drag will help at one or 2 places in the canyon as well. Please do not place webbing in canyon as it is a ghosting canyon and pulling ropes will create massive rope grooves in the soft sandstone. Full of water. 1-2 swims. Warm water, no wetsuit.
